Hawaiʻi is famous for beaches, volcanoes, tropical flowers, and lush mountain forests, but some of the islands’ most extraordinary natural treasures have feathers.
Millions of years of geographic isolation allowed birds arriving in the Hawaiian Islands to evolve independently from their relatives elsewhere. Over time, this produced an astonishing collection of species found nowhere else on Earth, from brilliant scarlet honeycreepers to specialized forest birds with bills adapted for very particular foods.
That isolation also made Hawaiian birds unusually vulnerable when new predators, diseases, and environmental changes arrived. Many species have already disappeared, while others survive only in small areas of native forest.
Today, the birds of Hawaiʻi tell two stories at once: one of extraordinary evolution and one of urgent conservation.
🐦 Why Are Hawaiian Birds So Unique?
The Hawaiian Islands are among the most isolated major island groups in the world. For a bird arriving here naturally thousands or millions of years ago, successfully reaching land was only the beginning.
Once established, populations could become separated from relatives elsewhere and from populations on neighboring islands. Over generations, natural selection and geographic isolation produced new forms uniquely suited to Hawaiian forests, wetlands, mountains, and coastlines.
Before humans arrived, Hawaiʻi supported at least 113 endemic bird species, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources. Endemic means that a species occurs naturally nowhere else in the world.
Among the most famous results of this evolutionary history are the Hawaiian honeycreepers, a remarkably diverse group of finch relatives that evolved bills suited to very different diets. Some developed long curved bills for feeding from flowers, while others became seed eaters or insect specialists.
Unfortunately, many of those evolutionary experiments have been lost. Hawaiʻi has experienced one of the world’s most severe bird-extinction crises.
🌺 Native vs. Endemic Birds in Hawaiʻi
The terms native and endemic are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean quite the same thing.
A native bird is one that reached Hawaiʻi naturally rather than being introduced by people. A native species may also occur elsewhere.
An endemic bird is native to Hawaiʻi and naturally found nowhere else.
The pueo, for example, is generally recognized as an endemic Hawaiian subspecies of the short-eared owl rather than a completely separate species. The ʻiʻiwi, nēnē, ʻalalā, palila, and ʻakiapōlāʻau, on the other hand, are among the birds found naturally only in Hawaiʻi.
Hawaiʻi also has many introduced birds. Mynas, zebra doves, red-crested cardinals, and numerous other familiar birds seen around resorts, parks, towns, and neighborhoods were brought to the islands by people.
That means a colorful bird seen in Hawaiʻi is not necessarily a native Hawaiian bird.
🪿 Nēnē: The Hawaiian Goose

The nēnē (Branta sandvicensis), or Hawaiian goose, is Hawaiʻi’s official state bird and one of the great success stories of Hawaiian wildlife conservation.
Nēnē are descendants of goose ancestors that reached the Hawaiian Islands long ago. Unlike geese strongly associated with lakes and ponds, nēnē are remarkably adapted to life on land. They have relatively long legs and less webbing between their toes, which helps them walk across grasslands and rough volcanic terrain.
Once widespread, nēnē suffered devastating declines from habitat alteration, hunting, and introduced predators such as cats, dogs, rats, and mongooses. By the 1950s, only about 30 birds remained in the wild.
Captive breeding, predator management, habitat protection, and reintroductions gradually reversed the decline. Several thousand nēnē now live in the wild, and the species was changed from federally endangered to federally threatened in 2019, although Hawaiʻi continues to list it as endangered at the state level.
Visitors may encounter nēnē in parks and other open landscapes, but the birds should never be fed. Feeding can cause them to associate roads and people with food, increasing their risk of vehicle collisions and other harm.
❤️ ʻIʻiwi: The Scarlet Jewel of Hawaiian Forests

With brilliant vermilion feathers, black wings, and a long curved bill, the ʻIʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea) is one of Hawaiʻi’s most recognizable native birds.
ʻIʻiwi belong to the Hawaiian honeycreeper group. Their slender curved bills are particularly suited to feeding on nectar, and the birds move through native forests searching for flowering plants, especially ʻōhiʻa lehua.
They also help pollinate native flowers.
ʻIʻiwi feathers were historically used in Hawaiian featherwork, including elaborate garments associated with chiefly rank and status. Their vivid color made the feathers especially valued.
Today, however, the ʻiʻiwi faces a major threat from mosquito-borne avian malaria. Many surviving populations are concentrated in higher-elevation forests where cooler temperatures historically limited mosquitoes. As temperatures rise, that refuge becomes less secure.
The species still occurs principally on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, and Kauaʻi, with much smaller remnant populations elsewhere.
🔴 ʻApapane: A Common Native Honeycreeper

Another bright red forest bird is the ʻapapane (Himatione sanguinea).
Its coloring can cause it to be confused with the ʻiʻiwi at first glance, but an ʻapapane has a shorter, less dramatically curved bill and a somewhat different pattern of dark feathers.
ʻApapane feed heavily on nectar from ʻōhiʻa lehua blossoms and are important pollinators of native forests. They can travel considerable distances while searching for trees in bloom.
Although many Hawaiian honeycreepers are severely threatened, the ʻapapane remains one of the most numerous and widespread surviving members of the group. It is currently classified by the IUCN as Least Concern, although disease, habitat degradation, and other threats remain relevant to its long-term future.
Seeing an ʻapapane moving among brilliant lehua blossoms offers a glimpse of an ecological relationship that developed over countless generations.
🖤 ʻAlalā: The Hawaiian Crow

The ʻalalā (Corvus hawaiiensis), or Hawaiian crow, has one of the most dramatic conservation stories in the islands.
ʻAlalā are intelligent, vocal birds and the only surviving native Hawaiian member of the crow family. Historically, they lived in forests on Hawaiʻi Island and played an important ecological role by eating native fruits and spreading seeds.
Habitat degradation, disease, introduced predators, human persecution, and other pressures eventually drove the species from its native range. The last wild pair was observed in 2002.
For years, ʻalalā survived only through conservation breeding.
That story is now entering a hopeful new chapter.
Five young ʻalalā were released into the forests of East Maui in late 2024 as part of a pilot effort to restore the species to the wild. The project continued into a second year, and additional birds were brought into the Maui release program in 2025. More than 100 ʻalalā also remain within conservation breeding programs.
The work is closely monitored because earlier reintroduction attempts on Hawaiʻi Island faced significant challenges.
Restoring the ʻalalā would do more than save a single bird. As fruit eaters and seed dispersers, Hawaiian crows can also help restore the forests themselves.
🦉 Pueo: Hawaiʻi’s Native Owl

The pueo (Asio flammeus sandwichensis) is Hawaiʻi’s native form of the short-eared owl.
Unlike many owls, pueo are frequently active during daylight hours. They can sometimes be seen gliding over grasslands and open landscapes while searching for prey.
Pueo hold cultural importance in Hawaiʻi as well. In some Native Hawaiian families and traditions, pueo may be regarded as ʻaumākua, ancestral or family guardians.
Biologically, pueo present an interesting case. They are considered endemic at the subspecies level rather than representing an entirely unique species. Researchers believe short-eared owls colonized Hawaiʻi comparatively recently in the islands’ natural history.

On Oʻahu, pueo are state-listed as endangered. Habitat loss, introduced predators, collisions, and a poorly understood condition sometimes called sick owl syndrome have all raised conservation concerns.
🦅 ʻIo: The Hawaiian Hawk
The ʻio (Buteo solitarius), or Hawaiian hawk, is the only native hawk remaining in Hawaiʻi.
It is endemic to Hawaiʻi and today occurs on Hawaiʻi Island. Individuals appear in both dark and light color forms, and females are generally larger than males.
Before humans introduced rodents and other animals to the islands, the ancestors of ʻio likely preyed extensively upon native birds. Modern ʻio have adapted to a more varied diet.
The ʻio also holds cultural significance. The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources notes that ʻio are regarded as ʻaumākua in Hawaiian tradition.
The species provides another reminder that Hawaiian birds cannot be understood solely through biology. For Native Hawaiians, relationships between people, animals, ancestors, and the land can carry cultural dimensions that extend far beyond modern wildlife classifications.
💛 Palila: A Bird Tied to the Māmane Forest

The palila (Loxioides bailleui) is a Hawaiian honeycreeper whose survival is intimately connected with another native species: the māmane tree.
Palila have distinctive yellow heads, grayish backs, pale underparts, and stout bills well suited to eating seeds. Māmane provides the overwhelming majority of their diet, particularly immature seeds.
Today, palila are mostly restricted to a relatively small area of māmane forest on the slopes of Mauna Kea on Hawaiʻi Island. They occupy only a fraction of their former range.
This specialization demonstrates both the wonder and vulnerability of island evolution. When a bird becomes closely dependent on one type of habitat or food source, damage to that ecosystem can threaten the bird as well.
Introduced grazing animals, invasive vegetation, fire, habitat degradation, predation, and other pressures have contributed to the palila’s decline.
🔨 ʻAkiapōlāʻau: Hawaiʻi’s Woodpecker-Like Honeycreeper

Few Hawaiian birds demonstrate evolutionary specialization as dramatically as the ʻakiapōlāʻau (Hemignathus wilsoni).
This endangered honeycreeper lives only on Hawaiʻi Island and possesses an unusual two-part feeding tool. Its lower bill is short and sturdy, while its upper bill is much longer and curved.
The bird can use its lower bill to work into bark and wood before using the curved upper bill to reach insect prey.
The result is a feeding technique often compared with that of a woodpecker, even though Hawaiʻi has no native woodpeckers.
ʻAkiapōlāʻau are now largely confined to higher-elevation native forests, where they face threats including habitat degradation, introduced predators, mosquito-borne disease, and naturally low reproductive rates.
Their unusual bill is one of the finest examples of how Hawaiian birds evolved to fill ecological niches that, elsewhere, might be occupied by completely different bird families.
💚 Kiwikiu: Maui’s Rare Forest Specialist

The kiwikiu (Pseudonestor xanthophrys), also known as the Maui parrotbill, is another remarkable honeycreeper.
Its thick, curved bill allows it to pry, crush, tear, and dig into plant material in search of insects and larvae. Kiwikiu live in high-elevation native forests on the slopes of Haleakalā on Maui.
Their current range is tiny compared with their historical distribution.
Kiwikiu also reproduce slowly. Typically only one young bird is produced during a successful nesting attempt, and juveniles may remain dependent on their parents for many months. That slow reproductive strategy makes it especially difficult for populations to recover from disease or other losses.
The species is considered critically endangered.
🟢 Hawaiʻi ʻAmakihi: A More Adaptable Honeycreeper

The Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi (Chlorodrepanis virens) offers an interesting contrast to many of its highly specialized relatives.
These small yellow-green honeycreepers eat insects, nectar, and fruit and can use a broader variety of habitats and food sources. Populations occur across wide elevation ranges on several islands, with the species particularly widespread on Hawaiʻi Island.
Some Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi populations occur at lower elevations where mosquito-borne disease has devastated other native honeycreepers. Researchers have therefore taken a particular interest in their apparent ability to survive in some disease-prone environments.
Their relative adaptability provides hope that at least some Hawaiian birds may be able to respond to rapidly changing ecological conditions.
🌊 Hawaiian Waterbirds and Seabirds

Hawaiʻi’s remarkable birdlife is not limited to forests.
Native wetlands support species such as the aeʻo, or Hawaiian stilt; ʻalae ʻula, or Hawaiian gallinule; ʻalae keʻokeʻo, or Hawaiian coot; and koloa maoli, the Hawaiian duck.
The islands and surrounding Pacific also provide essential nesting habitat for seabirds.
Albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, terns, tropicbirds, and other ocean-going species may spend much of their lives over open water before returning to Hawaiʻi to breed.
Some nest on the main Hawaiian Islands, while remote islands and atolls in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands provide exceptionally important seabird habitat.
These marine birds connect Hawaiʻi’s terrestrial ecosystems to a vast stretch of the Pacific Ocean.
🪶 Birds in Hawaiian Culture
Birds have long held important places within Hawaiian culture.
Their feathers were used in some of the most sophisticated artistic traditions developed in Polynesia. Hawaiian featherwork included cloaks, capes, helmets, standards, and other objects associated particularly with aliʻi, or chiefly rank.
Feathers from birds such as ʻiʻiwi were highly valued for their brilliant colors.
Traditional Hawaiian relationships with birds were also expressed through language, mele, moʻolelo, place names, proverbs, and spiritual traditions.
Some birds could have relationships with particular families as ʻaumākua. Others appeared in stories or became closely associated with particular landscapes.
Because these traditions vary and carry deep cultural meaning, it is better to understand Hawaiian birds within their specific cultural contexts rather than assigning every species a simplified symbolic meaning.
⚠️ Why Have So Many Hawaiian Birds Disappeared?
Hawaiʻi’s extreme isolation created unique species, but it also created vulnerability.
For millions of years, native birds evolved without many of the mammals, predators, and diseases familiar elsewhere. When people and introduced species arrived, ecosystems changed rapidly.
Major threats have included habitat destruction and alteration, introduced mammals, invasive plants, predation, mosquito-borne disease, and climate change.
Rats can eat eggs and chicks. Cats prey on native wildlife. Mongooses threaten ground-nesting species. Introduced ungulates such as pigs, goats, and sheep damage vegetation and alter forests.
One of the most serious problems is something far smaller: the mosquito.
🦟 Avian Malaria and Hawaiʻi’s Forest Birds
Mosquitoes were not originally part of Hawaiʻi’s ecosystems.
The introduced southern house mosquito can spread avian malaria, caused by the parasite Plasmodium relictum. Many endemic Hawaiian forest birds evolved without exposure to this disease and have little natural resistance.
The consequences have been catastrophic.
Cool high-elevation forests historically offered native birds some protection because mosquito populations were limited there. Climate warming is making those refuges increasingly vulnerable as mosquitoes are able to survive at higher elevations.
ʻIʻiwi are particularly susceptible. Research cited by Hawaiʻi wildlife officials found that nine of ten experimentally exposed ʻiʻiwi died following a single bite from an infected mosquito.
Conservationists are therefore exploring landscape-scale mosquito suppression as one tool for preventing additional extinctions.
🌿 Protecting Hawaiian Birds
Saving Hawaiʻi’s birds requires more than protecting individual animals.
Conservation programs restore native forest, control invasive predators, fence sensitive habitats, remove destructive ungulates, breed extremely rare birds in managed facilities, protect nesting grounds, conduct research, and reintroduce species when conditions allow.
Mosquito control has become another important part of that effort.
One method under development and implementation uses the Incompatible Insect Technique, which releases male mosquitoes carrying an incompatible strain of naturally occurring Wolbachia bacteria. When those males mate with wild females carrying a different strain, their eggs do not hatch, gradually suppressing the target mosquito population. The method does not involve genetically modifying the mosquitoes.
Projects like the ʻalalā reintroduction show another side of conservation: decades of breeding, habitat management, research, cultural collaboration, and carefully monitored releases may be necessary to give a species another chance at life in the wild.
👀 How Visitors Can Help Hawaii’s Birds
Visitors do not need to be biologists to help protect native birds.
Enjoy birds from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing nesting or feeding animals. Never feed nēnē or other wildlife. Stay on designated trails in sensitive habitats, and obey closures designed to protect nesting or endangered species.
Cleaning footwear and outdoor equipment can also help prevent invasive organisms from moving between forests.
Drivers should watch carefully for nēnē and other wildlife near roads.
Residents can make an additional difference by keeping cats indoors, reducing standing water where mosquitoes breed, and supporting programs that protect native forests.
Responsible birdwatching is simple: observe without changing the behavior or surroundings of the bird you came to see.
🌈 A Living Legacy Found Nowhere Else
Hawaiʻi’s birds are among the most extraordinary results of island evolution.
The brilliant ʻiʻiwi moving between lehua blossoms, the nēnē walking across an ancient lava field, the pueo gliding over open countryside, and the tiny honeycreepers hidden within mountain forests are each part of a natural heritage that exists nowhere else on Earth.
Their story also carries a warning.
Isolation created Hawaiʻi’s spectacular biodiversity, but it left many species poorly prepared for introduced predators, diseases, habitat change, and a rapidly warming climate. Hawaiʻi has already lost far too many birds.
Yet conservation has produced genuine successes. Nēnē were brought back from the edge of extinction. ʻAlalā are once again flying in Hawaiian forests through carefully managed releases. Scientists and conservationists are developing new ways to protect honeycreepers from mosquito-borne disease.
Hawaiʻi’s surviving birds are therefore more than beautiful creatures to look for on a visit to the islands. They are living pieces of an evolutionary, ecological, and cultural story that has been unfolding for millions of years—and one whose next chapter is still being written.
